Spain approves Bill granting citizenship to Sephardic Jews
30 Jun. 2014
Spain´s cabinet approved last Friday June 6 a Law proposal (still pending to be approved by the Parliament) allowing descendants of Jews forced into exile centuries ago the right to dual citizenship.
The reform will allow dual nationality to Sephardic Jews who must have their heritage vetted by the Spanish Federation of Jewish Communities or by rabbis where they live. Applicants will also have to pass a Spanish culture test. Spain currently grants this privilege only to Latin Americans. Jews were sent into exile in 1492.
